In a May 2026 Dubai audit, chat assistants cited Engel & Völkers, TripAdvisor and Condé Nast Traveler most, while Google AI Overviews leaned on YouTube, Instagram and Reddit. Here is what the data shows and how to find the sources in your own category.
When someone in Dubai asks an AI engine for a hotel, a developer or a clinic, the answer often links to other websites. Those links show where the engine found its information, and they tell you where your business needs to be mentioned. Public data on AI citation sources for Dubai queries is still thin, so this guide sets out what the published research shows, where it stops, and how to find the sources behind answers in your own category.
What published data shows about AI citation sources for Dubai
The clearest Dubai data comes from BARS Agency's May 2026 audit of property and luxury hotel queries. Across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, the most cited sources were Engel & Völkers with 63 citations, TripAdvisor with 52 and Condé Nast Traveler with 45. Google AI Overviews leaned instead on YouTube, Instagram and Reddit.
| Where the answer came from | Top cited sources in the audit |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity | Engel & Völkers (63), TripAdvisor (52), Condé Nast Traveler (45) |
| Google AI Overviews | YouTube (22), Instagram (20), Reddit (17) |
The report describes the chat assistants as drawing mainly on editorial media and aggregator portals. It also found that roughly 85% of citations in broad category queries came from third-party intermediaries, and that Jumeirah and Emaar were the only Dubai brands whose own websites appeared among the top citation sources.
Keep the limits in view. The audit measured 200 AI responses on a single day, 2 May 2026, in English only, and covered two sectors: property and luxury hotels. It tells you a lot about those markets and much less about clinics, restaurants or law firms. For what the same audit found about individual developers, see our breakdown of Dubai real estate in AI search.
Why global lists of the most cited websites can mislead a Dubai business
A global list of the websites AI cites most may not match what local answers use. Yext's study of 6.8 million citations found that forums like Reddit, which look dominant in brand-level studies, made up just over 2% of citations once location and query context were applied. Local questions pull from different places.
Contently's ranking of the top sources large language models cite, for example, draws on global data with no split by country or city. That is useful for a national brand thinking about Reddit or Wikipedia. It is a weak guide for a Dubai clinic deciding where to spend its time.
The Yext data, collected from July to August 2025 across 200,000 business locations in finance, food service, healthcare and retail, shows how much the answer depends on the engine and the industry:
- By engine: Gemini took 52.15% of its citations from brand websites. OpenAI's model took 48.73% from listings. Perplexity showed a strong preference for industry-specific directories, such as TripAdvisor for food and hospitality, especially on subjective questions.
- By industry: in healthcare, listings made up 52.61% of citations. In food service, listings made up 41.63% and reviews 13.28%, the highest review share of any industry. In financial services and retail, websites made up 48.16% and 47.62%.
- By control: Yext found that brands can directly influence or manage the sources behind about 86% of consumer-facing citations in its data.
Yext's figures come from its own client and prospect locations, not from Dubai specifically, and the Dubai audit above shows a very different mix for luxury property and hotels. Treat both as reasons to check your own category rather than as rules. Yext also notes that two people asking the same question from different places may get different answers.
Should you prioritise Reddit, then? Only if your own checks show Reddit threads being cited for your Dubai questions. Otherwise, your time is better spent on the sources that actually appear.
How to find the websites AI cites for your own Dubai queries
Ask your real buyer questions with web search switched on, open the list of sources behind each answer and write down every domain. In ChatGPT, click the Sources button below a searched response. Google's AI Overviews include links to supporting pages. Repeat across several engines, because the Dubai data shows they lean on different sites.
OpenAI explains that ChatGPT decides whether to search based on the question, and that you can force a search with the web search icon. Force it for this exercise, since an answer without search has no source list to inspect.
For each answer, log the domain and sort it into a type:
- Your own website, including service and location pages.
- Listings, such as Google Business Profile and industry directories like TripAdvisor.
- Reviews and social, such as YouTube and Instagram.
- Editorial, such as Condé Nast Traveler.
- Agencies and aggregators, such as Engel & Völkers in Dubai property.
- Community, such as Reddit.
Run each question several times in a clean session, since single answers vary. Our Dubai AI visibility audit guide covers the setup and how many runs to do. After a few rounds, count how often each domain appears. The domains that keep coming back are your real citation sources.
What to do with your list of citation sources
Sort the domains into three groups: sources you control, sources you can influence and sources you can only earn. Fix your own website and listings first, since Yext found most citations in its data came from sources brands can manage. Then work on accurate coverage from the editorial, review and agency sites that keep appearing in your category.
Sources you control. Make sure your website states the facts buyers ask about, and that it can be used. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Sources you can influence. Listings and review profiles can carry outdated details you have not spotted. Our guide to fixing wrong information ChatGPT holds about your UAE company walks through checking your official record, correcting your Google Business Profile and contacting directories.
Sources you can only earn. Editorial coverage and agency or aggregator pages cannot be edited, but they can be pitched, corrected and supplied with accurate information. If the same publication appears in half your logged answers, it deserves more attention than a generic list of the most cited websites.
Does a Dubai business need high domain authority to be cited? Your log answers that better than any rule of thumb. If the cited sources in your category are listings and review sites, being present and accurate there may matter more than your own site's authority.
Where GEOscanAI's Source Trace fits
GEOscanAI's Source Trace publishes which sources AI engines used to answer specific commercial questions. A trace is only built when at least two engines actually searched, and a source marked as cited means the engine itself declared it read that page. The traces published so far cover software questions, such as CRM comparisons and pricing, not Dubai queries.
The methodology page is open about its limits. Reddit's robots.txt disallows all bots, so traces carry no Reddit evidence, and the method is scoped to questions with concrete figures such as prices, because opinions are phrased too differently to match reliably.
Use Source Trace to see how a full trace lays out cited sources for a real question, then apply the manual method above to the Dubai questions your buyers ask.
